Troop 71901 Younger Girl Scout Event TBD


Friday March 6th is a professional development day in North Reading. Troop 71901 would like to host a drop-off event for younger Girl Scouts that day. They are still in the planning stages and would like to gauge interest so please ask your troop parents if they are available that day.

Calling all Girl Scouts interested in Lego and Robotics!!

Join us for a Lego Robotics event with SOGO Action, Jan 19th 2-4pm for an introduction to the world of Lego WeDO!
This FREE event is open to Juniors and Cadettes and is presented by SOGO Action, a new STEM maker space located in North Andover. Staff from SOGO Action will be present to lead the girls through the workshop.
This class is designed to provide Girls a simple introduction to robotics and mechanical design while allowing them to explore and develop STEM skills through project-based activities. Working in teams, they will use these skills to design and program moving models, all while enhancing their problem solving abilities. Please register here.

Program Highlights

STEM and Outdoor programs for Cadettes and Up- The days are getting shorter, but there’s still plenty of time for girls to learn new skills! They can develop green urban landscapes, problem-solve, and experiment with bridges, gliders, and moon rovers alongside female engineers from Raytheon at MathMovesU on December 8. They can also get outdoors to learn about knife safety, build an emergency shelter, cook delicious dishes using a variety of outdoor cooking methods, and more at Build Your Outdoor Skills sessions throughout December. Register your girl today.

Last Call for Photos for Older Girl Fly Up Slideshow

May 15th is the deadline to send in your photos for the Slideshow.  If you have not yet sent in your photos to Mary Lasdin, please take the time by Wednesday to do so.  Send your 5-12 photos from your troop to Mary Lasdin at lasdin@comcast.net by May 15th to be included in the slideshow.  Mary would like you to label the photos if possible with your troop # in order of your favorites.  For example, troop 71901.1, 71901.2 and so on.  If you need help scanning older photos, let Mary know.

Final Call to sign up for the Amazon Robotics Tour on February 26th.

 We have a total of 15 and may open it up to Reading Service Unit.  We are able to have 25 participant, but we want to make sure North Reading girls get first priority to sign up.  Contact Denise Kung or Lisa Coroa-Bockley in the next couple of days if you have Girls who want to register and have not done so yet.

TIME SENSITIVE! Amazon Robotics Tour – February 26th (3:30-5:00 p.m.)

We are very excited to be running this free STEM event for a tour of Amazon Robotics for registered Girl Scouts in grades 6-12 only.  Take a tour of the Amazon Robotics facility and hear about their state-of-the-art robots. Council is equally as excited as this is a FIRST and will be offered in the future to other Service Units! Parents are invited to attend and will be required by Amazon Robotics to sign a non-disclosure agreement. 

Please send this flyer (here )to your girls and their families ASAP.  Girls do not need to participate as a troop.  We will need at least three chaperones to attend, and they must be CORI’d through GSEMA.

Danvers SU Event: Cadette Book Artist Badge

Cost per girl for the Cadette workshop is $19 and includes the 1.5 hour workshop, and a personalized/signed copy of Jen Malone's Young Adult Books. (She will have a selection to choose from at event).
Time: 6:30-8pm
Date: February 8th
Location: Maple Street Church Social Hall (Enter through the back on Charter Street and go down stairs straight to Social Hall.)
There is a minimum amount of participants for this event to run so please make sure you RSVP as soon as possible.

We invited local author, Jen Malone to work with our scouts on the Book Artist Badge.  We will most likely have about 15 girls but we wanted to let you know in case you know of any Juliettes or other cadettes in area that might like to join us.  Ideally we would like a leader or CORI'd/registered adult to stay with girls if we do not know them but that is open for discussion.  If you need any other info feel free to call/text Andrea Sears at  781-479-6438

Amazon Robotics Tour

Target is Feb or April vacation week – tours are offered Mon-Thurs 9-3pm

Take a tour of the Amazon Robotics facility and hear about their state-of-the-art robots. Tour groups have the opportunity to receive an overview of the facility and how it runs day to day, followed by a visit to the manufacturing floor. You will have an opportunity to take pictures at the end.  All visitors 18+ must sign an NDA to enter the facility. This opportunity is normally open to girls 6th grade and up, however we will try to ask for an exception to allow 5th graders.  We need a minimum of 10 to run the tour.

Cadette Exploration (Maude Eaton)

Did You know girls can participate in Girl Scout programs and activities without being in a troop? There are hundreds of opportunities for girls to meet new friends, practice independence, and make their own adventures. Girls in grades 6-8 will learn more about the many unique opportunities available to them. Drop-off event.

At Boston Rock Gym
78G Olympic Ave, Woburn MA

Two times available:
1-3pm and 3:30-5:30pm

Join us as you test your skills and have a blast learning how to rock climb at this indoor facility. It is great fun for girls of all skill levels!

Experienced Boston Rock Gym instructors are available to belay the girls and encourage them in a supportive, non-competitive environment.

Girls should wear sneakers (no sandals or crocs).

This is a drop-off event. Parents of new Daisies are welcome to stay. Siblings or girls who are not registered Girl Scouts are not permitted to attend.

Anyone climbing at Boston Rock MUST sign a waiver. Only a parent or legal guardian can sign a waiver for their daughter. Please complete the waiver beforehand here .

Spooky Trails Along Dark Trails

Leaders,
This fun event is back! The last time it was run, the girls had a great time!
 

Your troop is invited to create a spooky story, read one from a book, or play one from a disc. Girls are encouraged to make their characters come to life and dress the part.
Each troop is asked to select an area within the Historic District (outdoors) to tell their story. It’s ok if multiple troops select the same location.
Possible locations:
   The steps of the library
   In front of the Damon Tavern
   Near the Barn next to the Putnum House
   The Putnam House and its grounds
   The building on the common
   The gazebo on the common
   On the steps of the Congregational Church
In the event of rain, all stories will be told in the Library Activity Room. This is a troop event and leaders/registered adults are expected to stay with their girls.

GSUSA Raytheon Cadette, Senior, Ambassador STEM Pilot Program

GSEM is excited to announce they have been accepted by GSUSA and Raytheon as a partner council to pilot the new Computer Science Journeys for Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors! Neither STEM experience nor access to computers are required to participate.  They sent an invitation email to troop leaders yesterday.  Interested Cadette, Senior, Ambassador, and multi-level troops (grades 6-12) please complete this brief form by January 19.  If chosen, your troop will receive a $100 Amazon gift card to support troop-related program expenses.

Want to participate? Here's how:
  • The troop completes six one-and-a-half-hour Journey sessions between February 2 and April 1.
  • The troop volunteer completes an information form before the start of the program and a post-program survey.
  • Each troop member completes a session tracker after each meeting and a post-program survey.

NASA wants you to help test new space science badges!

Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador troops! How would you like to:

  • Learn about space science and engage in scientific inquiry!
  • Receive a NASA badge test pilot patch----- designed solely for participating troops!
  • Be a part of history, as you help develop a new badge!
Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has teamed up with SETI Institute, ARIES Scientific, University of Arizona, and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific to create a new series of space science badges in collaboration with NASA! Daisy, Brownie, and Junior troops from Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEMA) have had great success participating in the pilot program. Now, GSUSA would like the assistance of six Cadette, six Senior, and six Ambassador troops from GSEMA to provide feedback on the new badge activities.

If selected, your troop will be expected to complete all the badge activities and participate in the evaluation of these materials within an allotted time frame. STEM Conference & Expo 3/12/17

5th Annual STEM Conference & Expo, March 12th from 9 to 5 at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel and Conference Center.  This is an event from girls in grades 6-12.  The cost is $45 for registered Girl Scouts and $70 for non-members.  The registration deadline is February 28th.
