Event Guidelines - 2010

Event or Workshop Running Guidelines

An event is: a fun activity or outing specifically for a group of scouts larger than a single troop that is not tied to the earning of a specific badge. Examples are: Gingerbread House Making, Roller Skating, NYC trip, etc...

A badge workshop is: a set of activities or lessons that a troop guides participants through to help them fulfill the requirements of a specific badge. The goal would be to help the girls earn a badge in a single afternoon.

Additional money making opportunities can be run by scouts - see Volunteer Essentials & Additional Group Money-Earning.

Keep in mind that scouts cannot raise money for other organizations. The guidelines for what girls can do are spelled out in Volunteer Essentials->Addition Group Money-Earning. Remember, the girls can raise money but cannot solicit money.

The following events are run by troops/Leaders FOR the Service Unit, to earn money to run other events for the Service Unit:
- Roller Skating
- Father/Daughter Bowling
- Mother/Daughter Tea
- Gymnastics

For these established events, the Event Organizer fills out the forms, obtains permissions from Council, obtains insurance, etc... The funding of Service Unit events is provided BY the Service Unit. Leader-planned, girl-run events or workshops can be done as service projects.

The Service Team wants to limit events and workshops to one per level, per month - i.e., one Daisy event or workshop, one Brownie event or workshop, one Junior event or workshop and one Cadette and up event or workshop per month.

If your troop wants to run an event and keep the proceeds:

- they must get GSEM approval for the event/workshop
- they must let the Service Team know what/when the event/workshop is, so that we can make sure that it isn't the same as another already planned event or workshop AND it isn't scheduled at the same time as another already planned event or workshop
- the girls must be involved in both the planning and the running of the event or workshop (this cannot be a leader planned/leader run event or workshop)
- they must fill out all of the various forms, obtain permission from Council, obtain insurance, etc...
- they must participate in the annual cookie sale

There are additional ways to earn money - however, your troop still needs GSEM Council approval to run these. See Volunteer Essentials (link is on the blog) and search on Additional Group Money-Earning.
