Cookie Info
Cookie Advisor Training was held last week.
The order database is new this year - but it is the same as the Fall Product Sales database (same username and password if you've already set that up).
Booth sale requests started 11/15. Assignments will be sent out later this week and will also be posted on the blog.
This year's cookies are the same as last. This year's theme is "What Can A Cookie Do" and the theme animal is a penguin.Door to door cookie sales will be 12/9-1/20 this year. Booth sales can run until 3/9. Cookies will be delivered to the town on 2/10.
If you had girls drop from your troop - you'll need to get the updated info to Anne Valade. If the inactive girls stay on your troop roster, they will add in to your troop goals.
Daisy participation is optional.
If you want to sell at public locations, there are steps to be followed, depending on the location. Mall locations are assigned through Council. Selling on Tufts campus, for example, requires Council approval, Tufts approval, and letting Kerstin know so that she can make a courtesy call to the Medford Cookie Coordinator.
New leaders - YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE THE COOKIE ADVISOR for your troop. This is the perfect opportunity to get another troop mom involved!Any questions - contact Kerstin March march.family@verizon.net .
Fall Product Sales
11 troops participated in Fall Product Sales, met all the deadlines, and earned a total of $5361! This was about double the participation and double the revenue of last year! The Service Unit earned 2% ($107) AND 15 Honey Roasted Peanuts will be donated to the North Reading Food Pantry. Shauna will be contacting the leaders when the product arrives (any day now).
Past Events
Halloween Party went well and everyone seemed to have a great time! Thanks to everyone who pitched in. The girls running the event really rose to the challenge and it was great to see how they went from wanting to attend to being proud of the job that they did!
Astronomy Night - 43 girls attended. The presenter was very enthusiastic and "awesome". Every girl got an opportunity to look through the telescope and even enjoyed being on a college campus while they waited for their turn.
As an FYI, the telescope is open to anyone every Wednesday night with good weather from 7-10pm.
Future Events
Gingerbread House Workshop - 12/4 - currently open to Brownies, but opening up to Juniors in order to meet the numbers. Limit is 40 girls - goal is 30 girls. Cutoff day will be extended to meet goals.
Caroling - 12/7, 12/8, 12/9
Times will be set up for drop in caroling at local nursing homes, Elderly Housing, McGlaughlin House, etc...
This is open to all levels. It would be useful to practice with the younger girls ahead of time. It has also been helpful in the past if leaders bring boomboxes and music to play in the background...
Fancy Nancy has been moved to at least January.
Service Project Ideas
Meals on Wheels tray decorations sign ups are now available on the blog. Please sign up to provide 40 small, non-edible, tray decorations for the Meals on Wheels recipients.
Bring Back the 4th is looking for groups that might want to participate.

Welcome Back, Changes and Reminders
There are a few Service Team vacancies - Batch Coordinator, Event Coordinator. If anyone is interested or knows of someone who might be "convinced", please let Amy Kelly know.
Troop Financial Reports are being accepted until 10/1 - turn in to Amy.
Volunteer Agreement Forms for 2011 are now online at www.girlscoutseasternmass.org. You can find it under Troop Management Online at the bottom of the page - and once you log in to your account. You will be required to have a signed form in order to register for any events online.
Troop Activity Forms have changed! You are now only required to fill out the forms if you are doing what is considered a "High Risk" outing. Forms are not required for meetings at your co-leader's house, the Fire Station, etc. Check Volunteer Essentials (on the blog or at GSEM's website) to see if your activity is "High Risk". Another change is that you must file the Certificate of Liability when submitting the form. For Town or Troop Sponsored Events (Corn Maze, Parade, Halloween Party, etc...) the Event Coordinator fills this out for all attendees.

Online registration ends 9/30 - after that time, all re-registrations will need to be done with the paper forms.
All troop changes (moving girls around, disbanding, etc) should go through Anne Valade so that she is aware of what is going on.
Registration Event was held tonight prior to this meeting. Lots of 1st, some K and a few 5th grade girls. Unfortunately only 1 adult volunteered to lead (Batch). If you hear of anyone looking to register, contact Anne Valade!
Blog Update - www.northreadinggirlscouts.blogspot.com
The blog will continue this year. Currently trying to update all of the info - so if you find any stale information or links, please let Alycia McGoldrick know!
We will continue to post minutes and event offerings. The email notification does seem to work for when something new is posted to the blog.
Please consider the blog a resource for your own use - if you want something posted, email it to Amy Kelly - and upon approval it will get posted! Troops have used this to advertise events and meet "publishing" requirements for badges.
Event Committee
The newly formed "Event Committee" met 3-4 times this summer with the goal of fleshing out a calendar for the year with ideas so that Leaders can know what to take advantage of as they plan out their own calendars.
The calendar is up on the blog.
A reminder: town-run events are those that mostly need adult help. Troop-run events can be used to earn money for a specific fund-raising need. The girls must be involved and doing the work of the event AND the troop must get Council approval and sell cookies.
We are looking for folk to help with or lead an event - Amy has the sign-ups.
Past Events
Thanks to everyone who came and helped with the 9/11 event. It was a nice day of rememberance.
Another thanks to all who helped out with the Apple Festival - there were family members roped into helping...thank them for us too!
Future Events
Corn Maze for Older Girls - 10/15, 6-8:30 pm in Ipswich. Girls will need to organize into groups of ~6. Girls not yet in high school will need a leader in the maze with them. Flyer is on the blog, forms due back by 10/7.

If your troop wants to sell Fall Products, contact Shauna Wagner for a Fall Sales Agreement and to get put into the database.
Cookie Info
Cookie sales will be 12/9-3/9 this year. Kerstin March will provide updates as they come in.
Service Project Ideas
Garden Club works with Sunbridge (the Nursing home on North Street) with a program called Garden Therapy. The girls could come in and help out with a small project on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm. They could help hand out material, or assist the residents. This can be for just one meeting if you want. This program runs in Oct-Dec, Mar-May.
Sunbridge is also always looking for folks to come sing.
The Welcome to North Reading sign - need folks to plant marigolds in the spring or something similar.
Adopt an Island program has locations that need to be adopted. This is a multi-year committment.
If interested in any of these Garden Club activities, contact Ruth Kennedy at ruthekennedy@gmail.com.
Meals on Wheels tray decorations - we will have sign-ups for this at the next Leader's Meeting.

Service Unit Update
Finance Update - we are in good shape, but do need a couple of good town events to keep things going. We now have Bowling, Roller Skating, and Gymnastics - but all of these have some flagging interest.
We are considering buying a portable sound system for use at things like Fly Up, Encampment, Karaoke Night...
Elisabeth Chee will be in the Transcript for having earned her Gold Award! Elisabeth presented a mock trial on social drinking laws to the 8th graders at the North Reading Middle School. Congratulations to Elisabeth!
Registration Update
◊ Registrations are being collected. Even if you do it on-line, give Anne a copy of the confirmation so that she knows who has completed it.
◊ Deadline for Early Bird is 6/17
◊ Tip - If you are using your Citizens Bank Debit Card (for any payment) - use it as a credit card and you will avoid the 35 cent point of sale charge.
◊ ASAP! If your troop is disbanding, please let Anne know ASAP!
Past Events
Fly-Up
◊ Mostly positive feedback, though there were minor glitches with the lighting and sound system.
Feedback:
- Some folk were shushing the girls during the slide show! Tell the girls next year that they can shout and cheer when their photos appear!
- Setup should be done at least an hour, if not an hour and a half before the doors open. This will make it appear less chaotic and allow time to fully test the lights and sound system.
- Need older girls to tough it out and show the younger girls that they aren't embarrassed to be scouts!
- Absolutely need use of the light board is using the NR Auditorium
- Should we be getting a bigger bridge?
Memorial Day Parade
◊ Beautiful day, LOTS of girls...all went well!
June Events
Last event of the year!!
Fun & Games Night - 6/23 - for Grades 4-12
◊ Part 1: 6-7:15 Scavenger Hunt
◊ 7:15-7:45 Snack/Scoring

◊ Girls may be asked to attend in uniform
◊ Ruth Kennedy will pass along information as it becomes available
300th Anniversary of North Reading (2013)
◊ Would like North Parish Park to be officially recognized as "Girl Scout Park". This was the location of the DPW Town Barn. A group of leaders cleaned it up and maintenance was eventually taken over by the town.
◊ Maybe we can put in a bring rememberance garden? Memorial walkway? Could this be used as a fundraiser?
◊ Maybe we have girls bring divided plants this and next fall from their family gardens to make it more of a "friendship garden"?
◊ Could we do something around this for Earth Day? Arbor Day?
Fall Registration Event
◊ Probably not at the Apple Festival
◊ Will be putting a note in the paper looking for interested Leaders...run an info night with no commitment required

◊ Still have not met town goal
Event Committee Discussion
There will be an event committee that will meet several times over the summer to try and fill out a Service Unit Event Calendar. The intent is to help Leaders with their planning, and attract more Leaders to help with an event - not run it on their own!
Ideas for the calendar:
◊ Halloween Party (this is a definite)
◊ Girl Scout Sing-along - this is to help the younger girls learn the traditional songs
◊ Fairy House Event - based on Betsy Williams offerings (check out betsywilliams.com for a great field trip idea for younger girls)
◊ Lasertag/Lazercraze
◊ World Thinking Day event - maybe tie this with an International Dance event?
◊ T-shirt design contest for 100 years of scouting
◊ Rock climbing
◊ Pool party
◊ Raingutter Regatta or Rope Runner event (check out http://roperunners.com/). This could be something that we try at an older girl encampment?
◊ Movie night (or morning after Thanksgiving movie event)
◊ Corn Maze
◊ Applefest
◊ Older girl encampment in the fall, younger girl overnight in the spring (local, just one night)
The first meeting of the committee will likely be the 12th of July.
An email will go out to the leaders, asking them to name 1 thing their troop would love to do - and the level of their troop.
That's all folks!

Council Updates
Journey kits are now available at the Girl Scout Store for troops flying up. These kits are intended to save the girls money and include sash or vest, journey book, flag patch, number patches, situpon and are $30 for the sash kit, $45 for the vest.
We are over our membership goal for the year - and Council made 96% of their goal. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished - we'll have a new (higher) goal for next year!
Troop Finance Reports are due to Amy by June 15th.
The report is just an account of what money was taken in and how it was spent. You don't have to get down to the penny and can round off your numbers. You will also need to attach a copy of the last bank statement received before the June Meeting. You don't have to have a zero balance - you can simply state that the remaining money in the account will be for next year. You can even state that it will be for remaining activities for this year.
Form and Guideline can be found here:

Gold Award Mock Trial - 5/16/11
One of our Ambassadors, HS Junior Elisabeth Chee, is running a mock trial at North Reading Middle School on 5/16/11 as the culmination of her Gold Award project!
Elisabeth is looking for a Lawyer/Judge professional that could help be the judge in her "mock trail". If anyone knows of someone who might be able to help - she can use them!
The mock trail is being presented to 8th graders at the Middle School on May 16th. Time needed - 12:30pm - approximately 2pm. The Trial is about the social drinking law. High School students and middle school students will be acting out a real trial that Elisabeth wrote which shows what can happen in real life if you are under age and caught drinking. The judge would need to make decisions for the trial - just like a real judge.
If you or anyone you know can help - please contact Elisabeth's mom for more information at jschee@comcast.net or 978-664-1612.
See attached flyer for more info

Misc

◊ Everyone agreed that Town-Wide events are important
◊ The numbers for Town-Wide events are really down
◊ There are always going to be conflicts and we shouldn't worry too much about that
◊ Need to start meetings during the summer in order to have events in the fall. Would be nice to have a fleshed-out calendar when the new year starts
◊ Fall events were really well attended
◊ 4th grade Juniors have not had many events
◊ Advanced calendar notification, even if it is just the month that the event will happen, will help Leaders with their yearly planning
◊ People might be more inclined to help run an event if they knew the whole thing wasn't going to fall on their shoulders

Blog Update
Blog email subscription now appears to be working. Link is at top left of blog. If you enter your email address, you will receive an email when new items are posted to the blog.
We posted a troop written review on the blog for a troop working on their theater badge. Remember that you can use the Service Team as a resource for all sorts of things! Just ask!
Misc
Girl Council would like to collect email addresses for girls currently in 6th grade and up
◊ Will allow them to solicit feedback and notify older girls of events
◊ Leaders will need to ask parents if the email addresses can be shared with Girl Council
There was lots of discussion around the idea of creating an Event Committee
◊ Committee could help fill out calendar
◊ Committee would not be responsible for running every event
Cookie Update
◊ Incentives are arriving next week, will have to distribute by next Leaders Meeting
◊ If you would like your incentives earlier, contact Kerstin March
◊ 23,735 boxes sold - more door to door sales this year, fewer boxes from booth sales
◊ Still a small quantity of boxes still available
S.H.A.R.E. Update
◊ Collecting envelopes - they should go to Anne Valade
◊ Will continue to collect at the next Leaders Meeting
A short Fly-Up check-in followed.
◊ If anyone has Xmas Candy Cane yard decorations, Julia Slavin would like to borrow them to use as decorations
◊ Melissa Audier is collecting photos for the slide show. An email went out to all Fly Up Leaders. Alycia to resend. If you did not get it...contact Alycia McGoldrick

Barnum - a review by Troop 73894
The play we saw was Barnum!, performed by the North Reading High School Masquers Club. It was about Barnum’s life and how he went from freak show to museum to a traveling circus. We enjoyed the acrobatics, dancing, and musical numbers. The costumes, wigs, and set were very colorful, exciting, and quirky. We thought the opera singer was fantastic and the lights and technical crew did a great job. Our favorite acrobatics were the single twirling spinner, the two pole climbers, tightrope walking, and the double trapeze artists.
On the other hand, we thought that the microphones didn’t work well and the plot was hard to follow at times. Some of the actors didn’t project their voices well enough. Our opinion of the beginning was that it was a little slow. During the intermission, the bathroom lines were very long.
There was a lot going on during the finale, and it was tough for the performers to outdo themselves since the play was so awesome. The carnival beforehand was fun and creative, but it was geared toward a younger audience who would not have enjoyed the play as much. Overall, we thought that the play was exciting, colorful, and well performed.

Fly Up Meeting Minutes - 3/15/11
Fly Up Planning Meeting - 3/15/11
What is Fly Up? Flying up is graduation from one level to the next. Every troop that is moving from one level to the next can fly up and will receive her wings.
Troops can also earn their bridging patch - updated requirements are out at girlscoutseasternmass.org
It will be held at NR HS Auditorium on 5/22 6-8p.m. Because dates are tight, there will be no rehearsal; however, the Senior troop that is flying up will help coordinate the troops in lining up to minimize confusion.
This year's theme is "Candyland".
Ceremony will follow this format:
o Flag ceremony (5 min)
o Presentation of banners (5 min) explain banners
o Welcome (5 min) done by Amy
o Juliette Low World Friendship Fund Collection (5 min). This is a donation made to support troops around the world, suggested donation by each troop is 50 cents to 1 dollar per girl
o Crossing the bridge (30 min)
o Entertainment - Slide show (5-10 min)
o Leader Awards (5-10 min) done by Amy
o Closing Ceremony (5 min)
o Refreshments (25 min)
Each troop takes a job - and the girls should be involved in doing the work of the job. Jobs were assigned as follows:
All girls should arrive 10 minutes early
Rosters were checked.
Each troop pays for wings, pin, bridges from their account (or have parents pay). We suggest that these items are NOT handed out at Fly Up.
No need to fill out an activity form – I will take care of that.
Each troop brings 3-4 dozen desserts.

Spring Service Project - Clean Out Your Closets! Drop Off 4/22
Please Join Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, Cradles to Crayons, and Comcast for Comcast Cares Day.
It's time to clean out your children's closets and donate your items to Cradles to Crayons.
Donations of children's goods are what make the Giving Factory possible, and make it so efficient and effective. They accept your donations of new and gently used clothing, books, toys, baby items, and school supplies for kids age 0 to 12. www.boston.cradlestocrayons.org for a complete list.
Please only donate clothing that you would have your children wear. Not rips, tears, or stains.
Don't forget as a council we are collecting New Socks and Underwear. We are halfway to our goal of 5,000 pairs of each! If you donate socks and underwear to one of these locations, let Joan Reilly know how many pairs so we can add them to the tally.
Bring your items to one of the following Comcast locations and they will transport it to Cradles to Crayons where they will sort and distribute it. There is a very narrow window for dropoff. Please do not call Comcast to arrange another time. If you can't make this time, you can drop off directly to Cradles to Crayons prior to April 30 for Comcast Cares Day. A limited amount of donations can be dropped off at the Waltham Council Office during the week of April 25. Call or email Joan Reilly to arrange jreilly@girlscoutseasternmass.org 781-373-4232
There is space for 50 Girl Scout Volunteers to help work at the Cradles to Crayons warehouse on April 30 for the morning. If you are interested in helping, please contact Joan Reilly by April 15. This is a first come/first serve opportunity.
