Troop 71901 Younger Girl Scout Event TBD

Friday March 6^th is a professional development day in North Reading. Troop 71901 would like to host a drop-off event for younger Girl Scouts that day. They are still in the planning stages and would like to gauge interest so please ask your troop parents if they are available that day.

Calling all Girl Scouts interested in Lego and Robotics!!

Join us for a Lego Robotics event with SOGO Action, Jan 19th 2-4pm for an introduction to the world of Lego WeDO!
This FREE event is open to Juniors and Cadettes and is presented by SOGO Action, a new STEM maker space located in North Andover. Staff from SOGO Action will be present to lead the girls through the workshop.

This class is designed to provide Girls a simple introduction to robotics and mechanical design while allowing them to explore and develop STEM skills through project-based activities. Working in teams, they will use these skills to design and program moving models, all while enhancing their problem solving abilities. Please register here.

Girl Scout Lego Build Challenge

Calling all Girl Builders - Daisies, Brownies & Juniors!!!!

Join us for a Girl Scout Lego Build Challenge on Sunday January 19 where Girls test their building skills and have a BLAST with a multi-level team to problem solve various challenges and scenarios! Last year's challenge involved being marooned on a remote desert island and building a shelter, food, and an escape pod off the island. Great fun for Girls of all skill levels! Financial Literacy Badges

Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors are eligible to earn two Financial Literacy badges through the Toyota Driving My Financial Future program. To receive these badges, complete the following steps by December 1:

• Complete all requirements for the two badges. For individual badge requirements, consult the Badge Explorer.
• Complete the badge request form. 
• Mail the badge request form and the appropriate evaluation form (for Juniors or for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors) to 111 East Grove St., Middleboro, MA, 02346, or scan and email all completed forms directly to jcollier@gsema.org. 
  

Halloween Party

Annual Halloween Party Event 

Sunday, October 20^th, 2-4pm

Moose Lodge, North Reading

The cost is $10.  Girls should dress in costume.  Check out the attached Halloween Event flyer here. 
with all the details including a contact should you have any questions. This event is not limited in number and is open to Daisies, Brownies and Juniors, but there is a deadline to sign up.  The deadline to sign up is October 7th.  This will allow us enough time to order patches, crafts, and supplies for the event.  Please note that your daughter must be re-registered for the new membership year which starts October 1^st in order to attend this event and siblings are not allowed to attend.

Events do not have to be attended by the entire troop, girls may participate in any town or council run event.  If you already received this information from your troop Leader, we wanted to let you know that the registration part of the flyer sent out initially mentions Venmo as a method of payment.  Venmo is not being offered for the Halloween Party event since we are in the process of changing the Venmo account.  You can pay with either Cash or Check made payable to NRGS.  Also, if your Leader is not going to attend the October 7^th, Leader meeting, you should make arrangements to have your form and payment dropped off at the meeting to make sure we receive it in time.  The Leader meeting is being held at the Library Activity Room from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, October 7^th.   There is usually someone setting up around 7:15 p.m.

Last Call for Photos for Older Girl Fly Up Slideshow

May 15^th is the deadline to send in your photos for the Slideshow.  If you have not yet sent in your photos to Mary Lasdin, please take the time by Wednesday to do so.  Send your 5-12 photos from your troop to Mary Lasdin at lasdin@comcast.net by May 15^th to be included in the slideshow.  Mary would like you to label the photos if possible with your troop # in order of your favorites.  For example, troop 71901.1, 71901.2 and so on.  If you need help scanning older photos, let Mary know. 

 

Final Call to sign up for the Amazon Robotics Tour on February 26th.

 We have a total of 15 and may open it up to Reading Service Unit.  We are able to have 25 participant, but we want to make sure North Reading girls get first priority to sign up.  Contact Denise Kung or Lisa Coroa-Bockley in the next couple of days if you have Girls who want to register and have not done so yet.

2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

GSEMA has the opportunity to nominate up to 9 girl members for the 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards (7 middle school and 2 high school aged girls). The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognizes outstanding young people from across the United States. It is the largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. Since its creation in 1995, they have recognized more than 125,000 young people who’ve made a difference in their communities.

What recognitions are granted by this award? 
Honorees are granted at 3 levels.
   1. Local Honorees. Chosen by GSEMA. Will receive a certificate and if they qualify will also receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Prudential will review all local honorees and determine if girls move up to state-level judging.
   2. State-Level Honorees. One middle-level and one high school student will be named in each 50 states and the District of Columbia in February 2019. Those selected will receive: $1,000, a Silver Medallion and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. in May 2019 for gala awards ceremony and other exciting events. Chosen by Prudential.
   3. National Honorees. In Washington, five middle-level and five high school students will be named America’s top youth volunteers of the year by the program’s national selection committee. Those selected will receive: an additional $5,000, a Gold Medallion, a trophy for GSEMA and $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice. Chosen by Prudential.

Who can apply?
An individual student enrolled grades 5-12 as of November 6, 2018.
A legal resident of any U.S. state or Washington, D.C.
A girl who has engaged in a volunteer activity after September 1, 2017.
Any girl member who meets these criteria is encouraged to apply. Previous honorees selected
by GSEMA have been girls who have earned their Bronze, Silver or Gold Award as well as
others. Keep in mind that girls must apply as an individual.

Spooky Trails Along Dark Trails

Leaders,
This fun event is back! The last time it was run, the girls had a great time!
 
Your troop is invited to create a spooky story, read one from a book, or play one from a disc. Girls are encouraged to make their characters come to life and dress the part.
Each troop is asked to select an area within the Historic District (outdoors) to tell their story. It’s ok if multiple troops select the same location.
Possible locations:
   The steps of the library
   In front of the Damon Tavern
   Near the Barn next to the Putnum House
   The Putnam House and its grounds
   The building on the common
   The gazebo on the common
   On the steps of the Congregational Church
In the event of rain, all stories will be told in the Library Activity Room. This is a troop event and leaders/registered adults are expected to stay with their girls.

Haunted Halloween Party!

The North Reading Girl Scouts is hosting a Haunted Halloween Party on October 21st at the Moose Lodge from 2pm to 4pm.  Please also note that the girls will participating in a Halloween parade at the Sunbridge, Meadowview, Nursing Home in NR as part of a community service.  They will walk in costume from the Moose Lodge next door to the Nursing Home for the last 45 minutes and then back to the Moose to be picked up.  This is considered a neighborhood walk and thus is included as part of the annual permission form which every girl MUST sign prior to the start of each new membership year or October 1.

April is Financial Literacy Month and we are proud to announce our collaboration with Toyota Financial Services and Girl Scouts of the USA to offer the Driving My Financial Future program!  Please find information about it  here. Girls in grades 4-12 can learn all about budgeting, owning a business, how to finance their dreams, and more----- all while earning badges and a new patch! All Princess Juniper wants for her 13th birthday is a very small country all her own, where she can practice being Queen with a group of willing kid subjects. But when Juniper and her friends arrive in their new mountain kingdom, they learn that building their own country is not nearly as easy as they’d thought it would be. Then they find out their homeland is under attack—but what can they do from so far away? And is someone really trying to steal Juniper’s throne right out from under her? 

Author Ammi-Joan Paquette will read an excerpt from Princess Juniper of the Hourglass and be available to answer questions and sign books during the event.  Hands on activities will also be available for the girls.  Our council shop will be open and offering a 10% discount on your purchase.
