Meeting Started: 7:35pm

Anne introduces herself and Debbie as acting Service Unit Co-Coordinators. Tonight is the investiture and rededication ceremony. The ceremony starts with the Pledge of Allegiance and a Leaders’ Promise, A Charge to Leaders, and the Girl Scout Promise. Anne gives new Leaders Girl Scout pins.

Anne: The Girl Scout pin is the official uniform, everything else is optional. Wear it at meetings and events as well as any place you want to show that you are a Girl Scout member.  The pin shows the example to girls and tells everyone you are a leader should they need assistance at an event. Please wear your pin. Thank you for volunteering and making a difference in the life of a girl.

Old Business:

The Halloween party hit capacity and was successful. Lisa is looking for feedback and comments or feedback? Everyone was very happy and had a great time. There were a few photos of girls left behind. Lisa also has Halloween patches if anyone did not get one. Debbie will put it in the leader email.

Star Gazing: 17 girls attended and it went well. A cloud blew in but the girls still had a nice presentation. Wednesday night is open to the public for free. This is located at Merrimack College in Andover.

Food Pantry Flyer: We will be collecting for the Food Pantry during Christmas time. This year we are focusing on household cleaning, health and beauty. The flyer will be sent out in the Monday email. Each level will be assigned a particular category. Please return items to the December leader meeting or to the Caroling event.

Kerstin: Fall Product wrap up, The products will be delivered on the 20th. Ruth is looking for volunteers to help sort. 139 cans of peanuts will be going into the Thanksgiving baskets at the Food Pantry. 15% of sales goes to the troop or 17% if you opt out of prizes, Service Unit gets a little profit from council from what our town sold.

Anne: Cookies are going up to $5 a box. This is on the radio and people are positive about it and looking forward to cookie season. 90 cents a box goes to the troop or .95 cents if you opt out of prizes. The whole troop has to agree to opt out of prizes.

Debbie: The encampment committee met and picked Father's Day weekend, June 17-19. Debbie submitted the application last night. Camp Runels is the #1 choice followed by Camp Cedar Hill. More information to come in January. The distance is the same. Runels has a waterfront and Cedar Hill has a Girl Scout store and ropes course. The theme and activities will be based on the location. Would anyone else like to join the committee?

Lisa: Events, Caroling 12/13, World Thinking Day (no date yet), Me and My Guy or She and Me. Lisa would like to form a committee and plan for the spring.

New Business:

The Service Team introduces themselves to new leaders. Anne mentions the Parking Lot. Please put questions on sticky notes and place on the PL and we will answer all questions at the end of the meeting. There is also a green bag in the back for any comments, questions or concerns.

For our meetings that are held in Room 10 at the Town Hall, please come to the side door of room 10. Sign in your name and troop number on the sign in sheet. Leaders could also send a parent to the meetings to gather information if they can not attend.

Kerstin: Cookie information, Kerstin sent an email out for troop training on 11/24.

Sale starts 12/12 officially.

There are no booth sales at Stop & Shop before Christmas.

Leaders are welcome to attend the training about the sale with your cookie person.

Lemonades are 10 years old!

Girls can sell to JUST family over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The last day of the cookie sale is March 4th.

Order forms are due January 19.

Make sure to watch your money at booth sales.

Daisies should not handle money.

Sign up for mall cookie booths COBS through council. Check the website in January for dates.

If you would like to set up a booth sale in North Reading elsewhere or out of town, please let Kerstin know.

THERE WILL BE NO CUPBOARD RETURNS THIS YEAR!

Remind your girls to go door to door.

The payment system is different this year, and it's ok to collect money up front.

Opt out is for Cadette level and up.

There is no limit to how many booth sales you can have in North Reading through Kerstin. If you have a sale in another town, please let Kerstin know.

Kristin: Caroling on the Common December 13, 3:00-4:30pm. We are meeting on the common for the sing-a-long and will walk over to the Congo Church for cocoa, cookies and card making for Veteran's. Would you like to help at the event? Please contact Kristin. The Caroling flyer will be in the Monday email.

Anne: Leaders please make sure to tell the troop and parents about every event. Girls can go as an individual even if their Leader or other troop members cannot attend.

Troops can have a Facebook page, but please keep it "SECRET" so the public can not see it.

Did you know?

North Reading troops can use Camp Rice Moody for meetings for free. Melissa will put the sign up form on the blog.

Camp Rice Moody also has a projector for troops to use and borrow.

Membership stars: is everyone familiar?

For every year a girl registers as a Scout, she earns a membership star. You can give this in September when you register. Each level has a different color disc behind the star. You could have a rededication ceremony and give them their stars each year. All stars get carried forward to the new level uniform.

Author Night with Jen Malone

 This is a GSEM event– November 21 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  All Level Girl Scouts  NO FEE TO ATTEND for girls or adults.  The Waltham Girl Scout Shop, 265 Beaver St., Waltham, MA, will be hosting a Meet the Author Night with Jen Malone.  The event will start with a meet and greet with Jen.  Jen will do a reading from her book “You’re Invited” and will then sign copies of her book. Feel free to bring your book if you already own one.  Books will be available for sale during the event.  There will be a drawing at the end of the evening including a pre-released copy of Jen’s book “The Sleepover“  (won’t be hitting shelves until May 2016).  There will also be a hands on activity. Refreshments will be provided.  All participants will receive a 10% discount in the shop (applicable on all merchandise other than the books purchased for signing).  Register at GSEM website here.

Caroling on the Common 12/13/15

Painting Event November 7

Painting Event - Camp Rice Moody in Reading on Saturday, November 7 - open to all ages of Girl Scouts as well as Non Girl Scouts.  A Reading Service Unit troop 75097 has invited the NR Service Unit.  This is NOT a NRGS Event and troops do not have to attend together.  Girls may go separately.  There are three different time slots which can be found on the flyer here.  Any questions should be directed to Caryn at 339-222-3797 or emailing bobcarhayes@comcast.net.  

Veterans Day Event

Veterans Day Event, Wednesday, Nov. 11th, ceremony begins at 11 a.m. on the NR town Common.  Girl Scouts of any age level are invited and are asked to arrive at 10:30 a.m. They should wear their vest/sash and stand together as a group for the ceremony. This is not a drop-off event and girls do not need to attend as a troop. Families are welcome to attend.  After the ceremony, there will be refreshments and activities inside the Senior Center. Veterans Affairs welcomes any donations of cookies or snacks for the refreshment table.

Leaders--If you plan on attending with your troop or you have girls who want to go with their family, please email Lisa at krisandlisa@hotmail.com with your headcount no later than November 3rd.

Adult Day at Camp Oct. 31

Who is an Alumna?  If you went to camp, were in a troop, were or are a registered adult, led or helped to lead a troop, in any GSUSA or USAGO dominion, you are an Alumna.   If your SO ever was left lonely because you were off with the troop again, then he/she is an alum!  And we want you to come to camp on October 31st and have your kind of Girl Scout fun (no children allowed! No teenagers to snicker as you sing or negotiate the ropes course!.)  Sing, have tea, smores, climb, hike, chat with museum docents, chat with old friends and new, meet Juliette, see the amazing Great Hall makeover, give service - all of these options are available from 11 - 3 on October 31st!

Girl Scout Pledge

 Anne Valade introduced herself and Debbie Nearing as Co Service Unit Coordinators. We then went around the room starting with the Service Team and introduced ourselves and stated the level of Girl Scouts we are leading and the school we are at.

Anne Valade: Thank you for coming. Girl Scouting can't run without it's volunteers. Thank you for taking the step to become a leader. The time you spend with your daughter is a great memory and very rewarding.

 Protocol and Announcements: Anne explained the "parking lot". If anyone has any questions please use the paper and pen and tape your question to the parking lot. All questions will be answered at the end of the meeting. Also, the little green bag may be used for questions and suggestions as well. Please sign in on the sign in sheet with your name and troop #. Please review the troop rosters on the table and make any changes.  If any of the brand new leaders are confused as to what is being talked about, please feel free to ask any questions.  Early bird patches are still here for troops 73894 and 66232.  Any questions?

A leader asked if you are going to encampment for the day only with Daisies, would you need training? Debbie Nearing answered "no, you do not".

Lisa Alexander is collecting Halloween forms.

Amy Kelly mentioned that every registered Daisy received the Halloween flyer through email. The new troops are: 1 at the Hood School, 1 at the Little School and 2 at the Batch School. To our new leaders: Rosa from Council is hosting Troop Pathway Orientation. The next one is this Friday at Camp Rice Moody. If we get enough new leaders Rosa may come to North Reading for Troop Pathway training.

New leaders need: Troop Pathway training, date & time  for your meeting, to be registered and cori'd before they will receive a troop #. You then can train for your level of Daisy training. There is no rush.

Anne Valade: To look up training online go to: volunteers, then training. Be sure to go online and take GS 101. The Ultimate Guide lists trainings as well.

 Debbie Nearing: The encampment committee is Lisa Alexandra, Kerstin March, Bridget Easler, Jen Vant and Debbie Nearing. Debbie would like to meet and pick the date and talk about locations. Debbie needs to fax the dates and choice camp to council on November 15th. There is no guarantee we get the camp or weekend we want. Confirmation of encampment date will be known by December. Information on encampment will be put out in January. Typically it is a Friday-Sunday. Come for 1 or 2 nights or the day on Saturday. Debbie will be scheduling a meeting to start encampment plans. Anyone interested in joining the committee, please contact Debbie so you will be included in the meeting date emails.

 There is a winter encampment at Cedar Hill in November for troops that would like to try camping in colder weather. To see who was ready to sleep overnight, Debbie took her troop to the Library Activity Room for an overnight. What are the differences of Camp Runels and Cedar Hill? There is much more space at Cedar Hill and it has more closed in lodging sites than Runels for younger troops who are not comfortable with sleeping in tents.  Runels also has a waterfront.

Ruth Kennedy: Star Gazing in this Monday Oct. 17th and offered to Juniors and up. 11 girls have registered. Hopefully Monday will work if it’s not cloudy. Please watch for an email for Ruth if there is a change of date.

The Fall Product ends Oct. 27th. Please have all data in by the 26th at 10pm or well before. The Fall Product Sale is nuts, candy and magazines. Everything is reasonably priced, it's a quick sale, cash up front and delivered by Thanksgiving. Please give checks to Kerstin and booklets with names by Oct. 30.

Magazine subscriptions are much quicker if ordered online especially if you are giving as a gift. The FP items will be at Ruth's house for pick up.

If you need to add a girl to your sale, email Travis to add a girl to your roster. Ruth has his email address.

Lisa Alexander: This year we are having a drive for household and toiletries (instead of the CCS household mitten tags we did in the past) for the food pantry in the month of December. Family gift tags are still available at the Post Office if you would like to do that as well.

The Girl Scouts have their food drive in March. Last year the Middle School did March as well. Will the Middle School do that again? Could each troop be responsible for a bin at different locations in town?

Other events:  Astronomy, Halloween, Veteran's Day, Caroling on the Common. The Service Unit is asking for volunteers sit on a committee. Let Lisa know if you would like to be part of a committee for an event.

 The Halloween party has at least 95 girls. Can anyone stay to help? Please let Lisa know. Set up is at 12. The party is 1-3 and break down is at 3:00.

Veteran's Day is Nov. 11 and on the town common. The Girl Scouts are welcome and there are refreshments after a quick ceremony. Lisa will send a flyer.

Please make any suggestions for future events on the Big Event Sign up Sheet.

We have right now for planned events: Jan. 18- ice skating with Reading, February (World Thinking Day), March (Food Pantry month), April (Autism Awareness), gymnastics over April vacation, May is the Memorial Day Parade, June we have fly-up and encampment. A mother/daughter event would be nice idea this year. The Autism Awareness in April is not a Girl Scout event and will be run by Lisa Alexander. Lisa will be asking Girl Scouts to volunteer to help at the event.

Finances: How to set up an account and what to spend the girls money on is in Volunteer Essentials under forms and resources, chapter 5. Email Lisa with any questions. You need 2 people to sign up for a bank account and you have to get the necessary paperwork from GSEM to open a troop account.

If you would like to have your own fundraiser, you must participate in the Fall Product and Cookie sale. Lisa suggested a car wash or badge workshop to earn your own troop money.

For new Daisy leaders, all financial info. will be part of your training.

Amy Kelly: All leaders and new leaders receive the Ultimate Guide. The guide has family outings, trainings and troop activities. You may also go just with your daughter to any activity. Over 250 programs for girls in the book and also look online at www.hergirlscouts.org.

New this year, the outdoor programing events - you can sign up anytime, even on the same day of the activity.

Check out Wednesday Webinars on the GSEM website. You cannot log in on an iPad and the next one is in November and called Girl Scout Traditions.

There are nice family discounts for being a member of Girl Scouts. Please look on page 7 in the Ultimate Guide for discounts at some activities.

For cost of events or programs: Split the cost into thirds, 1/3 from the troop, 1/3 from the parents and 1/3 from the girl.

If you are going to do a troop activity, you need to fill out an activity form online. You do not need to fill out the form if you are going to do an activity from the Ultimate Guide or a GSEM program.

 The meeting started at 7:45pm with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Pledge.

 Anne Valade: Thanked everyone for coming and announced the new Service Team volunteers. Anne and Debbie Nearing will jointly share the position of acting Service Unit Coordinator. Amy Kelly is the new registrar with a registration team of school coordinators: Jo Gibson (Hood), Ruth Kennedy (Batch), Kristin Puliafico (Little).

 Registration:  The registration event planned for 9/16 was mentioned that it was being held at the LAR 6-8pm. You may also register online. Troop registration deadline is 9/30. After the 30^th, parents will need to register girls themselves. If you are looking to transfer girls to another troop, please go through the registration team. We try to accommodate all girls. Amy's goal is to place every girl.

If you have any questions or concerns, please keep the registration team in the loop.

 The Ultimate Guide from GSEM will be in your mailbox in a few days!  This guide will have all the fun activities for your troop and families that will be run by Council.

 Also, the Service Team directory went out in an email two weeks ago. This tells people about the positions for the current year with emails if you need to reach out to anyone. The troop directory will be sent out in a Monday email after the changes are made.

Amy and the registration team: If you registered before June 30, 2015, please see Amy to pick up your early bird patches.

Jo Gibson: Jo has a 2nd year Daisy troop from the Batch and Hood combined. Jo is the school coordinator for the Hood School. Talk to Jo if you have any questions about registering girls from the Hood.

 Ruth Kennedy: Ruth is the interim Batch School Coordinator. If anyone has a daughter at the Batch and would like to take on Ruth's position, please talk to Anne or Debbie.

 Kristin Puliafico: Kristin is the Little School Coordinator. She is also Cori authorized along with Debbie Nearing and Kerstin March. Debbie will be sending a list of people whose Cori's have expired.

Fall Products and Cookies:  Ruth and Kerstin: The Fall Product kits are ready! Volunteer agreement forms need to be filled out to receive your online password for Fall Products. We tasted the samples that Ruth and Kerstin brought. There are some new items this year and items only available online. The products are magazines, nuts & candy. Please collect the money when you sell the item, troops need to pay for entire order upfront. Ruth loves the fall sale, they make great gifts for teachers, babysitters, CCD volunteers, coaches, and your bus driver! The items will arrive November 20, right in time for Thanksgiving. The prizes for the girls are super cute. Girls can opt out of prizes and receive 17% on sales instead of 15%. All information is on the Leader Facebook page. Create a giraffe patch online incentive. All selling instructions are on the Fall Product envelope.  Sale date is September 25 to October 26.

 Ruth would like all troops to please spread the word for selling the honey roasted peanuts to be donated to the North Reading Food Pantry. North Reading Girl Scouts will be donating cans of peanuts for Thanksgiving day baskets to local families. The donated cans of peanuts are $5 a can and we would like to sell 100 cans. Ruth posted a video of how the toffee is made on the Leader Facebook page. The sale runs 9/25-10/26. Please talk to Ruth or Kerstin with any questions. GSEM will email you a password. If your troop wants to run a money raising event, the troop needs to sell Fall Products and Cookies. Magazines and items can also be ordered online and they will ship within 48 hours. Very easy!

 Kerstin March: Cookies went up to $5 a box for the upcoming cookie season. Kerstin is interested in mentoring someone to take over the cookie position. The job is done mostly online and could be split between two people, one to manage booths and one for online duties. The position is from November to mid March. A very manageable job!

 Banking and Events: Lisa Alexander is our new Treasurer and Event Coordinator. Lisa was talking about Citizens Bank and how the Girl Scouts are grandfathered in for no fees. Call Tony at Citizens Bank if you are getting a monthly maintenance fee. Also, there is a fee for paper statements. Lisa suggests trying online banking, it is free and easy and you can save $2 a month. Girl Scouts are tax exempt. You can take the tax exempt certificate in a store and not have to pay sales tax. This will be included to the Monday email.  Please see Lisa for banking questions.

 The NRGS Halloween Party is at the Moose on Oct. 25th 1-3 pm.  Would any older girls like to help? This is a drop off event, no siblings allowed and only for registered Girl Scouts. Lisa, Joanne Gibson, and Karen Buscemi are on the committee, talk to Lisa if you would like to join the Halloween party committee.  The flyer is on the blog at www.northreadinggirlscouts.blogspot.com. 

Star Gazing is on 10/19 at 7 pm. This is for juniors and up and put on by the North Shore Astronomy Club at Merrimack College as a workshop. The cost is $3 per girl. Please write one check to NRGS. The limit is 20 girls, so sign up ASAP if you are interested. The cloud date is 10/26 if the weather is not ideal. Contact is Ruth Kennedy and the flyer is attached to the blog and Monday email.

 Encampment:  Debbie Nearing: Encampment: Possibly in the spring. Leaders will need to be "camp certified" Grab a date for training on the GSEM website because they book up fast. More information on encampment will be known in January. NRGS generally give lodges to younger troops. Daisies may come and enjoy the day. They do not sleep overnight. For ratio and safety wise you will need one trained CPR/FIRST AID and one Camp Certified to attend. You could also go with another troop to meet requirements. All activities are planned for the entire day. A date of Father's Day weekend may be considered. More to come in January.

 Parking Lot:  Anne Valade:  The purpose of the parking lot is to put your thoughts and questions down on a piece of paper and place it on the parking lot. All questions will be answered at the end of the meeting.  There is also a small green bag for questions, comments and concerns if you have any.

Service Team Openings:  Debbie Nearing: Service Team opening-- Media Manager: The Media Manager is the contact for the Transcript, the Patch, NRGS Facebook page and NRGS Facebook Leader page. Responsibilities are placing photos in the Transcript and making sure the proper information gets to the right person. We would like to utilize Norcam as well.

 SHARE Coordinator: Support the mission of Girl Scouts and please contribute. This position would run an event to raise money for SHARE. SHARE gets one big push in April. 

 Blog:  Melissa Audier – was not able to attend the meeting but is still the blog manager and all information to be posted to the blog should be sent to her directly with a copy to Debbie.

 Thank you to Barbara Gravel for her many years of service on the Service Team. The Service Team gave Barbara a nice plant as a thank you gift.

New leaders will need training as well as current leaders who will need to train for the next level. Please go online and sign the volunteer agreement for the current year.

A Night Among the Stars, an astronomy event October 19

This is a North Reading Girl Scout run event for Junior level girls and up.  It takes place at Mendel Observatory, Merrimack College, North Andover on Monday, October 19th at 7pm. (“cloud” date Monday, Oct. 26th, 7pm).  This event is limited to 20 girls and costs $3.  Please see flyer here. North Reading Girl Scout's Haunted Halloween Party!

The Fall Product Sale will take place from September 25 to October 27.  Please email Kerstin March march.family@verizon.net to let her know if your troop is interested in participating in the sale.  Let her know how many troop members you have and she will bring that amount of packets to the first leader meeting on September 15th.

Wilderness First Aid -- January 9 & 10, 2016

Accidents happen. People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, you can make the difference between a good outcome and a bad one-and maybe even save a life.  The Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups.  

Girls who participated in the Winchester 2014 class found that WFA certification helped their applications to be employed by both Girl Scout and other summer camps.  Both Seniors and Ambassadors who participate will receive the appropriate First Aid Badge as well as certification.

WFA is now the Girl Scout safety requirement for troops traveling more than 30 minutes away from emergency medical care (e.g. hiking & backing trips, canoe overnights).

This two day class will be taught January 9th and 10th (Saturday and Sunday) at Rice Moody (Reading) and is open to girls ages 14+ and all registered Girl Scout adult volunteers.  The course will be $120 for both girls and adults ($145 non-registered).  An option to become CPR certified will be offered for an additional $35.  Course cost includes breakfast, lunch and dinner both Saturday and Sunday as well as the option to stay overnight at Rice Moody.

Registration Event!

North Reading Girl Scout registration is on Wednesday, September 16th at the Flint Memorial Library in the Library Activity Room from 6-8pm. This is for all girls kindergarten and up! We also need some volunteers for new troops! Come see what scouting is all about.
